The white PSP Go is the next generation of the Sony’s PSP, the popular portable version of the Play Station. One of the gaming world’s worst kept secrets, the PSP Go is almost ready for launch, with most of its details leaked to the waiting gaming press already.

The ultra portable version of the handheld gaming console was officially announced by Sony on June 2 2009 at E3, the Electronic Entertainment Expo at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Officially named the PSP-N1000, the white PSP Go features a completely different design than its predecessors and comes with faster hardware and better software. Sony has announced the official release date for the PSP Go as October 1, 2009 in the UK and USA.

White PSP Go Design

The white PSP Go console is meant to be ultra portable and that is what it manages to do, be small! The engineers at Sony have managed to completely overhaul the PSP, which now looks more like a touch screen mobile phone (except for the touch screen of course) than a handheld gaming console. The new device, weighing in at just 150 grams, is supposedly about 16% lighter and 35% smaller than its immediate predecessor, the PSP 3000.

The new PSP Go features a screen smaller than its predecessor, the PSP 3000. At 3.8 inches, the screen is able to support 16 million colors. Though the size of the iPod touch, the screen is still not touch based and not particularly enhanced. The screen slides back to reveal the controls which are pretty much the same as the previous versions of the PSP. This radical new design manages to drastically reduce the size of the PSP while still maintaining all its features.

Below the screen is the same set of controls. The directional control pad which is placed to the extreme left, and the square, triangle, circle, and X buttons are to the right. The analog keypad is no longer placed below the directional controls but beside them. The select and start buttons are likewise placed beside the square and X controls. Two shoulder buttons complete the controller set of the PSP.

And at the back should be the UMD drive. But surprise surprise! There’s nothing here. That’s because the Go comes without a UMD drive. To compensate for the lack of the drive, Sony has packed in 16 GB of flash memory for all your gaming needs. The memory also comes in handy for playing movies and music on the handheld.

Sony has overhauled the PSP with the modern mobile user in mind. Freeing the PSP from the UMD also has been a great step from Sony. Many commentators reckon that Sony has been slow in dropping the UMD and recognizing that the world has moved to a model where games and content are downloaded. Apply has shown the way with this with the iTunes portal which has been phenomenally successful, in fact its take up has exploded at a speed which has exceeded all expectations.

The device houses an infrared and an USB 2.0 port on the top edge enabling connectivity with the computer or the mobile.

The accessories available at the launch date are fairly limited at present. Keep an eye out for cheap white PSP Go offers in the form of PSP games bundles to see if you can get a better deal.

White PSP Go Hardware and User Interface

White PSP Go Hardware Overview
Though the design is small, the hardware running it is in no way similar. Though the console is supposed to feature a CPU running at the same 333 MHz as the previous generation, it might just be 40% faster than the CPU of the original PSP. One guess is that Sony may have made the provision for certain games to unlock the hidden potential of the CPU just as in the case of God of War for the previous PSPs. The PSP Go’s CPU is supported by 64 MB of main memory.

Other built in hardware includes built in stereo speakers, a headphone jack, two USB ports, battery and IEEE 802.11b Wi-Fi. In a first, the white PSP Go adds Bluetooth capability to the Sony handheld platform. Finally, the PSP can now be paired with Bluetooth headsets and accessories. This feature might also enable the PSP Go to interact with Bluetooth enabled mobile phones.

The Go also supposedly carries a built in microphone to enable users to make calls via VoIP using the popular Skype application.

What could be a big turn off for the regular PSP users is the lack of a standard mini USB port at the top of the PSP. This would mean a lot of accessories like PSP keyboards and GPS adaptors would become obsolete with the PSP Go.

Official accessories include AC adapter, car adapter, wired headphones, and single cradle for battery charging, carrying case, accessories pouch and cleaning cloth, and system pouch and protective filter.

The User Interface on the White PSP Go
The Cross Media Bar popularly known as the XMB still finds its place as the Go’s operating system. The newer XMB is enhanced and comes with features to enable the white PSP Go to function efficiently without the jettisoned UMD. The XMB comes with a revamped version of Sony’s Media Manger called the Media Go. This application interacts with the PC through the USB docket for transferring media to the PSP Go. It is also useful for installing games directly to the PSP Go through the PC.

The XMB of the PSP comes with 7 different categories: Settings, Photo, Music, Video, Game, Network, and PlayStation Network. The XMB can be personalized by changing the colors and order of the icons. Further customizations can be done by changing the theme of the XMB.

The XMB is based on the OS of the PSP also known as system software which can be upgraded directly via the internet or from the memory stick.

A very visible enhancement over the previous versions of the XMBs is the ability to suspend a game midway. Pressing the Home button will take you to the home screen of the XMB with a small ‘resume game’ control appearing at the bottom.

As the world waits to see what exactly will come out of the package in October 2009, the PSP Go promises to be very different from the latest PSP. According to an official announcement, Sony has no plans to replace the current PSP with the white PSP Go but the plan is to market the Go as a new device. Though it will still be interoperable with the PSP and the PS3, everything from accessories to storage media will need to be changed. Hopefully, the gaming console will be as popular as its peers.
